HORN
Horn is an SCR unit cover designed for Erkunt Tractor’s new tractor segment developed for the European market. The design integrates the SCR system into the tractor’s overall form while maintaining a cohesive visual identity.
Launch Year; 2019
Project Duration; 1,5 years
My Role: Leading the design process, researching, ideation, generating concepts, visualization, creating production-ready Rhino and Inventor files, communicating directly with manufacturer for production.
Background
As a result of new European emissions regulations, Mahindra (Erkunt Tractor), which exports its tractors under the ArmaTrac brand, needed to develop a new tractor segment incorporating a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system. The objective of this project was to design a functional and visually integrated cover for the SCR unit that complements the overall design language of the tractor.

Engine
SCR technology is an emissions-control system designed to reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by treating exhaust gases with a separate fluid. The system helps meet emissions standards while supporting engine performance, fuel efficiency, reliability, and durability.
The Challenge
Designing a cover for the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) unit considering the constraints below;
-
Corresponding to visual brand language
-
Being compatible the basis that it is going to be fastened to
-
Easy to assemble to the basis considering the mass production stage
-
Being made of durable material for over 300 ℃ heat coming from the SCR

Researching Similar Product
Existing exhaust pipes and SCR units from various tractor brands were analyzed in detail, focusing on their overall forms, dimensions, assembly methods, and material choices. Due to its durability and resistance to high operating temperatures, 400 Series Stainless Steel is commonly used across the industry. Although assembly methods vary depending on the SCR system, the covers typically consist of two matching shell components that are joined together and secured to the base using multiple bolts.

Ideation

Horn was designed to meet the regulatory requirements of a new tractor segment developed for the European market. Its final form and technical details were shaped by key design constraints, including alignment with the brand’s visual identity, compatibility with the tractor’s technical components, material durability, and ease of assembly.
