HORN

As a requirement of new regulations applied to all tractors in Europe, where the company mostly exports its tractors under the name of Armatrac, Mahindra (Erkunt Tractor) had to take actions accordingly to pose a new segment of the tractor that supports this regulation system in which Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) unit is used to correspond to it. The objective of this project was to develop a cover for the SCR unit that incorporates form and function.

Background

The SCR technology is a system that reduces nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission and maximizes engine power and treats exhaust gases with a second fluid to eliminate pollutants. It delivers more power, fuel economy, reliability, and durability.

The Challenge

Designing a cover for the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) unit considering the constraints below;

  • Corresponding to visual brand language

  • Being compatible the basis that it is going to be fastened to

  • Easy to assemble to the basis considering the mass production stage

  • Being made of durable material for over 300 ℃ heat coming from the SCR

Analyzing Different Brands' Products

Existing exhaust pipes with SCR unit of different tractor brands in the market have been analyzed in detail in terms of general forms, dimensions, assembly details, and materials. Due to their durability for higher operating temperatures, 400 Series Stainless Steel is commonly used by most of the tractor brands. Although it depends on the type of SCR system, the assembly detail of the covers on these tractors is usually in the form of two identical shapes cut in half and mounted each other, as well as to basis by several bolts.

Ideation

Horn was designed for the regulation need of a new tractor segment to be exported to Europe. The design took its final form and technical details by the constraints; corresponding to the brand’s visual identity, being technically compatible for the basis, having made of durable material, and easy to assemble.
